Welcome to the research website for St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton.

St. Joseph's is an academic health sciences centre and hospital fully affiliated with the Faculty of Health Sciences at McMaster University.  Our aim is to better understand certain diseases that are prevalent in today's society with the ultimate goal of being able to provide advanced medical therapies that will improve patients' health.

In pursuit of this goal, in excess of $25 million is spent annually on research in the areas of clinical science, mental health (including the Brain-Body Institute), nephrology, respirology (Firestone Institute for Respiratory Health) and virology - by the internationally renowned scientists, investigators and clinicians of our facility.

Research is also performed in the areas of biostatistics, evaluative medicine, nursing, physiotherapy, women's health, and more.

Nationally and internationally acknowledged accomplishments by research teams at St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton have included:
  • Development of breakthrough tests that help diagnose asthma
  • The invention of the world's most commonly used inhaler device for asthma, the AeroChamber®
  • Development and validation of sensitive tests for SARS
